Large crowds lined the banks of Carr Mill dam near St Helens last weekend to watch the RYA/Powerboat GP Lancashire Grand Prix. This was the second event in the British Championship series, the first having taken place at Oulton Broad ,Suffolk.
Five classes of boat took part ,each having 3 races and the crowds were treated to some extremely close and hard fought racing As a report on the meeting will probably be posted I thought I would talk about some drivers who deserve special mention, rather than just list results.
In the T850 monohull class it was great to see Steve Cash take an unexpected but deserved win.Series promoter Jason Brewer was very quick but had engine problem in every heat, better luck next time Jason.
Ethan Goodfellow must be mentioned in the GT15 class for the younger drivers,in his first season in national racing he had problems with his boat and engine,he then borrowed the club training boat and had his best result of the weekend.Ethan seems to me to improve with every race and it is good to see new drivers racing. George Elmore continues to get quicker every time I see him race, your turn on the podium will soon come George.
Now to the GT30 class,it was good to see Jamie Norris racing in a national championship meeting again and he put in some quick laps The always determined Tiegen Goodfellow had a battle with Thomas Mantripp for second place just beating him this time. The next event should be very close in this class.
In the F4 class Rob Veares took a slightly surprising win with pole position and some good starts.Ben Jelf also seems to be getting to grips with the different type of boat in this class. Leon King was caught out by a gust of wind in race 2 and overturned ,his pit crew had him and the boat ready for the next race.Just like to say thanks Leon for doing it just where I could get a photo.
The Formula 2 class had some superb and very quick racing to keep the crowd entertained. Local driver Matt Palfreyman as usual was giving everything he and his Moore boat had to catch Colin Jelf for second place until, near the end of race 3 he hit a turn buoy and the boat was catapaulted in the air ,fortunately landing the right way up.Next time Matt can you please wait till I `m looking your way
Overall a well organised meeting and we look forward to the next one at Kingsbury water park, near Birmingham on July 2nd-3rd.
